The Art Guild of the Purple Isles

In 1966 a number of artists began meeting at the studio of Miami artist, Bernice Shambaugh, in Islamorada. The group decided to call itself the Purple Isles Fine Arts Guild. Artwork was exhibited throughout the State of Florida as part of the Florida Federation of Art.

Purple Isles held its first art show in February, 1968. In 1974 Purple Isles withdrew from the Florida Federation of Art, which restricted its members to painting and sculpture. The Guild operated independently and expanded its membership to allow photographers and craft artist. It later changed back to a fine arts guild with photography but no crafts.

The goal of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles is to promote an interest in and appreciation of art, sponsor educational opportunities for the development of members talents, provide a means for displaying and marketing their work and encourage new talent. The guild also helps local schools with art education, supplies and encourages the young artist’s competitive efforts.

A judged art show is the highlight event of the year. In 2008 we had our 42nd Annual Purple Isles Members Judged Show with over 1000 people attending.

Additional art shows, plein air painting, workshops in various media are all guild activities available to members. We also host a few social events each year and have become quite an active group of artists.

Art Guild of the Purple Isles is the center for visual art activities in the Upper Keys and attempts to make art a prominent part of the community.

2012 is the Centennial Year for the completion of the Flagler Railroad Extension to the Florida Keys. The Art Guild invited students from Island Christin School to participate in the creation of the Flagler Memorial Mural at MM 95.3 in Key Largo. This awsome creation will long serve as an historic marker in the Upper Keys and is a tribute to the dedication of the Guild to foster the creation of art in the community.
